Created for the XXII Chilean Architecture and Urbanism Biennale, (Un) Monument is an architectural installation inserted into the constellation of sculptures and monuments that define Santiago’s civic center. Adopting the appearance of a monolithic object, the project questions the traditional role of the monument as a symbolic artifact dedicated to commemorating a fixed subject or narrative.
Stripped of explicit meaning, the pavilion employs mirrored surfaces that continuously reflect and frame its surroundings, shifting attention away from itself and toward the people, events, and urban life unfolding around it. Together with the ground markings that define its immediate context, the installation operates as a playful spatial device that encourages gathering, interaction, and collective occupation.
It is through these constantly changing encounters that (Un) Monument acquires its content and significance. Rather than presenting a static and permanent statement, the project proposes a monument whose meaning is continuously produced by its users, transforming reflection, participation, and change into the true substance of the work.
